Introduction: The Threshold of Eternal Love
Six days after Peter’s Confession and after Jesus told his disciples that the Son of Man must suffer and die as a prelude of the Kingdom of God, He led Peter, James, and John up a high mountain. As they reached the summit, the veil between heaven and earth thinned. In an instant, the teacher who walked the dusty roads of Galilee was transformed. His face radiated like the sun, and His garments became a dazzling, pure white.
In this moment of divine splendor, Moses and Elijah appeared, speaking with Jesus about His impending “exodus.” Peter, overwhelmed and perhaps seeking to “woo” the Divine with a grand gesture, exclaimed, “Lord, it is good for us to be here! I will make three dwellings—one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah.” While we might smile at Peter’s impulse, his heart reveals a very human truth we see highlighted every February 14th: when we encounter breathtaking beauty, we want to capture it. We want to buy the card, chocolate, and flowers to make the feeling permanent. This is the Tent Trap. We long to freeze-frame the revelation, turning a living moment into a static destination.
However, the Gospel uses the word metamorphothe—a metamorphosis. A metamorphosis is not a monument; it is an unfolding movement. This week, as many celebrate romantic love with temporary gifts, the mountain teaches us that God’s love is not a shrine to be guarded or a peak to be inhabited in isolation. It is an unfolding journey. We are not meant to build walls around our spiritual mountaintops, but to allow that “first love” to fuel our descent back into the world where love is most needed.
Exodus 24:12-18: The Backdrop of Glory
To understand this mountain, we must look at the “Mountain DNA” of our faith. Many pivotal moments happen on high places—Abraham on Moriah or Elijah on Horeb. In Exodus 24, Moses stood on Sinai surrounded by “devouring fire.” For six days, a cloud covered the mountain. On the seventh day, God spoke. Moses stayed forty days to receive the stone tablets—the “rules” for relationship.
But look at the difference here. On the Mount of Transfiguration, the rules have taken on flesh. Moses brought down stone; Jesus brings down Himself. The disciples aren’t just reading a Valentine about God’s affection from afar; they are standing inside the cloud. It’s the difference between reading a manual about fire and feeling the heat on your face. Jesus is showing them that the Law was the map, but He is the Destination. He isn’t just a bearer of light; He is the Light of the World. Yet, Peter is still trying to find tools to build a tent, trying to contain the Love that is meant to consume him.
Psalm 2: The Decree of the True King
While Peter is babbling about tents, Psalm 2 speaks of reconstructing the world. The Psalmist writes of a world where “nations rage”—a sentiment that feels all too familiar in the news cycle of 2026. We live in a world of political posturing and global unrest, often looking for love in all the wrong places.
But Psalm 2 reminds us of God’s decree: “You are my Son; today I have begotten you.” This is the coronation. On the mountain, the Father repeats this: “This is my Son, the Beloved… listen to him.” God is telling Peter—and us—”Stop talking. Stop building. Stop trying to manage the glory.” Listening is the ultimate act of love. If we aren’t listening to Him, we are just building tents for our own egos. Our “valentines” to God are often far too small for a King who inherits the nations. We don’t need to protect Jesus with our traditions; we need to submit to the King who has already won.
2 Peter 1:16-21: More Than a Myth
Some might say the Transfiguration is just a pious myth, much like the legend of St. Valentine. But Peter, writing years later, insists, “We did not follow cleverly devised myths.” He’s saying, “I was there. My hands were shaking, and I heard the voice from Majestic Glory.”
Peter calls this experience a “lamp shining in a dark place.” Notice that Peter didn’t stay in the tent. He eventually left the comfort of his home and took that light into the “dark places” of the early church. He realized that the “Morning Star” rises in our hearts not so we can feel warm, but so we can see the path through the valley.
There is a story of a monk granted a vision of Christ. Right as the vision appeared, the bell rang to feed the poor at the gate. He was torn—stay with the beautiful vision or go to the hungry? He chose the gate. When he returned, the vision was still there. The Christ said, “If you had stayed, I would have had to leave.” Real love is proved in the interruptions.
The Call and the Challenge: Taking Love Home
The Father’s command was simple: “Listen to him.” And what does Jesus say the moment the cloud disappears? He says, “Get up and do not be afraid,” and then He leads them down. He leads them away from the glow of the mountain top and toward the valley where a hurting boy is waiting for healing. He leads them toward the Cross.
The secret of the Transfiguration is this: Love is something you must give away in order to keep it. If you try to lock the light of the mountain in a tent, it fades. Love only stays radiant when it is in motion.
This truth feels especially poignant today as we find ourselves at a unique intersection of the calendar. Yesterday, many of us celebrated Valentine’s Day—a day dedicated to the sweetness of affection and the exchange of hearts. To paraphrase that modern day prophet, Forrest Gump, “Life is not like a box of chocolates.” The Transfiguration reminds us that the love of God is far more than a Hallmark sentiment or a fleeting feeling of warmth. While the world may define love by what we receive or how we feel, the mountain defines love by how we descend into the valley – the world in which we live.
As we prepare for Lent—beginning this Wednesday, February 18th—we are being called to leave the mountaintop. True discipleship is not found in the safety of the heights, but in the willingness to descend. We are summoned to trade the serenity of the summit for the complexity of the plains, recognizing that the love of God is not a sentiment to be hoarded, but a life to be poured out until it is spent.
It is tempting to stay here, isn’t it? To let the music, the liturgy, and the shared warmth of this community be our final destination. But a faith that never leaves the sanctuary eventually becomes a museum piece—beautiful, but cold.
The glory we have witnessed today is not meant to be a memory we look back on; it is meant to be the fuel for the road ahead. We descend the mountain not because the light has gone out, but because we are now the ones tasked with carrying that light into the shadows of our workplaces, our community, and our homes. We go down to meet the grief that hasn’t been comforted, the injustice that hasn’t been answered, and the neighbors who have yet to see the face of Christ.
We acknowledge the peace found in this sacred space, yet we must also hear the persistent urge of Christ to move forward and outward. The mountain gives us the vision; the plain demands our service. It is there, in the mess of the world, where the Transfigured Christ intends to labor. We do not go alone. The same Jesus who shone like the sun in the cloud on the mountain top walks beside us in the dust of the valley.
As Joseph Robinson so poignantly wrote in our Hymn of the Day, while capturing this bittersweet descent from the mountain top: “How good, Lord, to be here! Yet we may not remain; But since you bid us leave the mount, Come with us to the plain.” God is with us… (ELW 315)
